Coal places

Coal was the fuel of the Industrial Revolution, and now accounts for about 25 percent of golobal energy use. Places as diverse as Shanxi Province, China, Newcastle, England and Appalachia in the United States have been shaped by the historical development of coal resources. The economy, culture and politics in those regions are driven by the livelihoods that coal provides. This has included great wealth for some, tremendous political strife and labor unrest, and widespread human health and environmental impacts.
