Oil and gas Superfund sites

The vast majority of Superfund sites related to the oil and gas industries are refineries. These facilities remove impurities from the crude oil and gas in order to make usable fuels, but these impurities are then released to the environment. Improper storage and disposal of the wastes lead to leaks and spills of PCBs, VOCs, and other substances, many of which are carcinogenic and pose serious health risks.
