Superfund sites
The Superfund program, the common name for the United States environmental policy officially known as the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), was created to protect people, families, communities and others from heavily contaminated toxic waste sites that have been abandoned. A number of these sites are directly related to the energy industry due to the fact that the extraction, processing, storage and use of energy generates considerable toxic waste. Improper disposal of wastes, leaks, spills, and other negligent activities on the part of oil refineries, uranium mills, coal mining facilities, battery corporations, and other energy-related indusries have contaminated areas throughout the United States.
