Oil tanker accidents and oil spills

Accidental oil releases oil to aquatic environments can cause signicant environmental harm. Not only is oil combustible, but it also hazardous to wildlife, especially birds and marine mammals. The oil coats fur and feathers, reducing their insulative abilities, and if ingested, causes a number of additional health problems. Oil spill clean-up is a laborious, time-consuming and expensive operation.
