Chernobyl
a city in Ukraine (former Soviet Union), the site of the world's most severe nuclear accident to date. Human error caused a core meltdown at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant; 31 people died in the accident or soon after, and another 134 were treated for acute radiation syndrome. Total related deaths probably number in the thousands, and the long-term impacts (Chernobyl effects) are still being assessed.
