Pachauri, Rajendra
Rajendra K. Pachauri is an engineer and economist who has served as the chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), established by the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environment Programme, since 2002. Pachauri is the director general of the The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in New Delhi, an institution devoted to researching and promoting sustainable development To acknowledge his immense contributions to the field of energy and environment, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the President of India in 2001, one of India’s highest civilian awards. On December 10, 2007, Dr. Pachauri accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the IPCC, along with co-recipient Al Gore.
Dr. Pachauri has been appointed to various international and national committees and boards, including the International Solar Energy Society, the World Resources Institute, and the World Energy Council. He served as President of the International Association for Energy Economics and the Asian Energy Institute. Dr. Pachauri has also advised or held appointments at the World Bank, the East-West Center, and Yale University. He has been an advisor to many government agenices in India, including the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India, the Panel of Eminent Persons on Power, Ministry of Power, the Advisory Board on Energy, reporting directly to the Prime Minister, the National Environmental Council, and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
Dr. Pachauri has an MS in industrial engineering, a Ph.D. in industrial engineering, and a Ph.D. in economics from North Carolina State University.
